It’s Just Business

What does mail order retailer Lands End, 1-800 Flowers, and Amazon.com have in common? For that matter, what does EVERY company have in common? It’s that, regardless or communication device used, every business exists to attract and retain customers. We can therefore strike the word “Internet Business” from our lexicon. It’s just business.

This is worth pointing out because many owners have empowered their “web guy” to figure out how to sell their products and services online. I’m here to say that is a huge mistake. In fact, if your depending on a tech guy, web guy, or the brother-in-law “who is just great with computers” for anything related to your business you are setting yourself up for spectacular failure.

Only you, dear owner, have the brains and experience necessary to identify potential customers, position your marketing message, and articulate your value proposition. You are the master of the strategy and the decider of tactics. You can’t afford to outsource these jobs to people who do not understand your customer’s needs, lack industry knowledge, or understand your sales process.
